If there is such a thing as destiny in the horse world, Orion may be proof of it.
Registered AQHA colt Saturday Night Live "Orion" wasn't supposed to be part of anyone's plans. Born on July 26, 2025, he arrived as a complete surprise, catching everyone off guard and beginning a journey that would eventually lead him to the people who were meant to find him.
July 26, 2025, The owner of Orion's dam received quite a surprise when she went out to the barn around 11 p.m. and discovered a brand-new foal in the stall. Until shortly before his birth, no one even realized his dam might be pregnant. His mother was thin, and Orion entered the world much smaller than expected, giving him a challenging start from day one.
Despite those early hurdles, Orion quickly began capturing hearts.
After the passing of a beloved 30-year-old black stallion named Tarzan in December 2024, Orion's future owner, Sudie Fairall Owner and Trainer at Irons Horse Stables, had quietly been hoping to find another black colt. Word about the tiny black foal spread quickly.
While Sudie was vacationing in Montana, multiple people reached out to tell her about him. At first, she wasn't planning to bring another young horse home. After all, raising a foal is a significant commitment. But sometimes the right horse arrives at exactly the right time.

A conversation with friend helped change everything. Encouraging Sudie to take a chance, reminding her that Orion might be a "diamond in the rough" despite his difficult beginning and in November, Orion officially joined the farm.
Since then, he has become a favorite among everyone who meets him. Equal parts charming and mischievous, Orion's playful personality keeps people smiling. His owner describes him as always being his "bratty little self," a title that anyone who has spent time around confident young horses can appreciate.
I've had the opportunity to photograph Orion at local horse shows, and one of the things I enjoy most is seeing his curiosity and personality shine through both in and out of the arena. Young horses are constantly learning, and every show brings new experiences, new lessons, and new opportunities to grow.
Looking at him today, it's hard to imagine that this confident colt began life as a surprise foal with an uncertain future. His story is a reminder that great horses don't always come from perfect circumstances. Sometimes they arrive unexpectedly, overcome a rough start, and become exactly the horse they were meant to be.
I'm looking forward to continuing to photograph Orion's journey and seeing where the future takes this special young colt.
